Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)
Mixed Martial arts is the combination of all martial arts, including
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling,
and other disciplines into one event. These events became popular in
the United States in 1993 when the
Ultimate Fighting Championships
introduced the world to
Royce Gracie, who used Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
to defeat opponents of all sizes in no time limit matches. The only
way out was to submit your opponent or tap him out, knock him out,
or if your cornerman threw in the towel.
Because of the violent nature of these events, mixed martial arts fights, also known by the brand names Ultimate Fighting or Extreme Fighting, were banned in 47 states. The sport went underground from 1996 until about 2001, when new rules were put in place, time limits and weight classes were implemented, and fighters were required to wear 4 oz. gloves and mouth pieces.
At North Broadway, we blend Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with wrestling and
boxing to develop well rounded fighters who are capable of moving
into mixed martial arts if they choose.
Bryan Guidry has fought in 8 mixed martial arts fights with no losses. Five of those fights ended in submissions in less than 2 minutes. He has fought against UFC veterans Curtis Stout and Adrian Serrano. He also defeated top rated UFC contender Hermes Franca in a submission grappling event. (View one of Bryan's Fights)
